Maternal Fetal Medicine Focuses on the Management and Treatment of High-Risk Pregnancies

Dr. Kimberly DeStefano has joined St. David's Women's Center of Texas, located on the campus of St. David's North Austin Medical Center, as Medical Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine. Dr. DeStefano relocated to Austin in July 2009 and opened her practice, North Austin Maternal Fetal Medicine, PLLC, in August.

“Our maternal fetal medicine practice at St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas is an important component of our spectrum of care,” Don Wilkerson, chief executive officer of St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas, said. “This specialty provides care and treatment to women and their children during times of great uncertainty and risk.”

Dr. DeStefano completed her fellowship in maternal fetal medicine and was an instructor in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Florida, prior to joining the St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas.

Maternal fetal medicine is a branch of obstetrics that focuses on the medical and surgical management of high-risk pregnancies. Perinatologists are obstetricians who practice maternal fetal medicine. Dr. DeStefano uses ultrasound, chorionic villus sampling, genetic amniocentesis and fetal surgery or treatment to manage, monitor and treat mothers and their unborn babies.

“I am thrilled to be a part of St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas,” Dr. DeStefano said. “This facility is a place where women from across the region can receive the highest level of care with the latest in health care technology, as well as a superb standard of hospitality.”

Dr. DeStefano holds a doctor of medicine degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from The University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. DeStefano completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. She is a junior fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and is a member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.

Among her many accolades, Dr. DeStefano has been the recipient of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching award and the Allen B. Weingold Award for Significant Contribution to Medical Education.
